Randolph Portugal
Randolph Portugal is a 2L at Seton Hall University School of Law. He obtained his undergraduate degree from The College of New Jersey in 2012. Prior to law school, Randolph worked as a Civic and Community Engagement Specialist with Catholic Charities, El Centro de Recursos Para Familias in Trenton, NJ. Randolph then worked as a Bilingual Family Worker for Head Start, LEAP, Inc and began teaching ESL classes at UCEDA Institute in Lakewood, NJ. Afterwards, Randolph worked for the New Jersey Department of Child Protection and Permanency, where he was a member of the Permanency Bilingual Unity. Throughout his employment opportunities, Randolph served as the Chairperson for The Educational Opportunity Fund Statewide Alumni Association (EOFSAA) from 2012-2016. He sought to bridge the unemployment gap between EOF graduates and the job-market. With a core group of impassioned alumni leaders, Randolph assisted in re-establishing the organization’s 501(c)(3) non-profit status. Also, Randolph had the opportunity to be a Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) student member in 2011 and moved his way up to be a CGI U Commitment Mentor post-graduation for international student leaders whose community service initiatives deal specifically with immigrant and refugee populations. Randolph facilitated conversations, shared resources, promoted networking events, hosted webinars, and help CGI U student participants refine their community service projects through virtual and in-person meet ups.
Now at Seton Hall, Randolph has been actively involved and trying to make a positive impact in his law school community. After interning for the Honorable Judge John Vazquez in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in the Summer of 2021, Randolph became a Research Assistant for Melissa Powers who is the Director of Career Services and the Legal Education Opportunity (LEO) Program. Randolph is currently serving on the Honor Council and the Faculty Appointments Committee to represent students in ensuring integrity amongst his colleagues in their academic careers as well as faculty and staff through their hiring process of potential candidates for tenured positions. Randolph was also voted to be the LEO Advisory Student Board Representative amongst his LEO peers for the class of 2023. After meeting with students, faculty, and staff, Randolph has been working with them on implementing robust professional development workshops, a more holistic approach to academic support services, and an early prototype structure to increase student employment opportunities for students to join law firms as summer associates. Lastly, Randolph was selected to serve as the Region III (New Jersey) Representative for The Hispanic National Bar Association Law Students Division (HNBA-LSD) as well was selected to be on Seton Hall Law School’s Mock Trial Team. Randolph is currently interning at the New Jersey Office of The Attorney General, The Division of Criminal Justice. Ultimately, Randolph is looking into summer employment opportunities and hopes to continue assisting vulnerable families and help them navigate the legal system throughout his academic career.
